Conscientious objection: 100 years on

In the midst of World War I, as conscription came into force, Quakers worked with parliament to ensure men had the right to refuse to kill. In 1916, with the Military Service Act, Britain became the first country to give legal recognition to individual conscience, now enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Yearly Meeting focuses on living out Quaker faith

Registrations are flooding in for Yearly Meeting 2016 as around one thousand Quakers head to London next month for four days of work and worship.Yearly Meeting runs from 27 to 30 May in Friends House (opposite Euston Station) and focuses on “Living out our faith in the world. Are we ready to meet the challenge?" Listening to stories of experience, recognising and responding to the promptings of the Spirit and wisely using gifts to work with others to tackle the causes of injustice and inequality.

Quakers stand by #Stansted15

Peaceful protesters, known as the #Stansted15, have been sentenced for endangering safety at aerodromes. Three of them were given nine month sentences suspended for 18 months and ordered to carry out unpaid work. Eleven defendants were given community orders and must carry out 100 hours' unpaid work. One was given rehabilitation activity. Quakers are supporting the group who say their nonviolent direct action was in defence of human rights.
