Weirdly, I found myself agreeing when hearing retired Major General Tim Cross on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, saying that army recruitment is "not about being nice", it's about "fighting power" against the "Queen's enemies". This nakedly militarist agenda at least has the merit of honesty. The General has been irked by the fresh crop of British Army ads.Marketing the military is a difficult business, with recruitment rates stalling (PDF). But the marketers seem to have settled on 'belonging' as the army's selling point. I'd like to call out the lie.

I have attended the national commemoration to mark International Holocaust Memorial Day in London for several years. It is a deeply moving event and each time it manages to explore not only what happened in Europe to many Jewish, gay, disabled, Roma and communist people in the Holocaust, but also reminds us all of the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Quakers have always diligently written tracts, pamphlets and books, including those about sexuality. Work to produce Towards a Quaker View of Sex began in 1957, and it was published in 1963. It was the first religious text to positively explore same-sex relationships, stating: “It is the nature and quality of a relationship that matters… The same criteria seem to us to apply whether a relationship is heterosexual or homosexual."

I've been working in the children and young people's team since 2005 and I still remember the day I was interviewed. A beautiful sunny day in a really big dark room with a grandfather clock. But it's one of the interview questions that has really stuck with me – how are you going to work to explore spirituality with young Quakers?

In December 2018, I launched a survey for Quakers in Britain on diversity. Using the material gathered from questions sent to meetings and committees by Meeting for Sufferings and the individual data gathered from the survey, I've been building a picture of Quaker communities across Britain. The survey had 2,011 responses (roughly 10% of all Quakers in Britain) and has generated rich and varied information, in terms of actual diversity and attitudes to it. I make no claims of representation. It is a self-selecting sample.

Policies that show generosity towards asylum seekers make some European politicians very nervous, which is why some of what we have seen in Europe in the last few days is so remarkable. The deportation of asylum seekers is being suspended (Germany), immigration detainees are being released (Italy), homeless people are being housed (France), and some are being given temporary asylum (Portugal).

We were watching 'Lock Down', a new play by Journeymen Theatre, about Ron, serving a life sentence, and Kathy, a newly appointed Quaker prison chaplain.
