I live in a small town. Two years ago, thieves broke into the mediaeval parish church and stole the church silver. When I heard about this, I had to think of this passage from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount:“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." We know that the costs of climate inaction would be catastrophic, in financial, ecological and human terms. And yet we are hearing increasingly strident voices claiming that we cannot afford to act.
