Soaring house prices, welfare cuts and loss of social housing have sparked a housing crisis. For Quakers at Yearly Meeting it was a hot topic and now they are questioning peers who are beginning a line by line examination of The Housing and Planning Bill in the House of Lords. Quakers in Britain say this Bill is a missed opportunity for the government to reduce inequality in the housing system. Instead it will increase inequality between those who are home-owners and those who are not.

In the midst of World War I, as conscription came into force, Quakers worked with parliament to ensure men had the right to refuse to kill. In 1916, with the Military Service Act, Britain became the first country to give legal recognition to individual conscience, now enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

More than 100 Quakers from England, Scotland and Wales came to Westminster today to take part in The Time is Now, a mass lobby of parliament urging MPs to take action on climate crisis and environmental breakdown. Greta Thunberg welcomed to Friends House
Swedish climate striker Greta Thunberg sparked a global strike to protest at the lack of government action to combat the climate crisis. Next week (22 and 23 April) she will be in London. Her two-day programme begins in Friends House, home of Quakers in Britain.

Quakers stand by #Stansted15
Peaceful protesters, known as the #Stansted15, have been sentenced for endangering safety at aerodromes. Three of them were given nine month sentences suspended for 18 months and ordered to carry out unpaid work. Eleven defendants were given community orders and must carry out 100 hours' unpaid work. One was given rehabilitation activity. Quakers are supporting the group who say their nonviolent direct action was in defence of human rights.
