The courage of our convictions

Over the past two years South East Scotland Friends have been developing a concern about increasing militarisation in society. We heard that Edinburgh was to be a focus for Armed Forces Day, and thought it would be a good opportunity to make our concern more public. We planned a joint witness with the Scottish Peace Network.

In 2012, at 28 years old, I stood just behind the fountains at Trafalgar Square waiting for a taxi to arrive. It was early April, bright and cold. The square was busy, as it often is, but today was different. Instead of the movement and transient atmosphere, people were sat down facing a stage in front of the fountain.

From grief to hope: the enduring power of nonviolent resistance to Assad

The seemingly sudden collapse of the Assad regime in Syria provokes a mixture of grief and hope. Grief for the uncountable losses of 13 years of violence, and a hope that the door might be ajar to a more peaceful future. Syrian activists described the event of December 2024 like a dream coming true, but the dream looks fragile given military action by Israel, an uncertain prospectus from the new government and no shortage of geopolitical manoeuvres to exploit the new reality. In the present tumult, it's easy to forget the uprising began with ordinary people.
