Children's books about war have proliferated since the turn of the century, to the extent that it is now commonplace subject matter. In particular, the two world wars have inspired the largest volume of children's fiction.

What is a book of discipline? To modern ears it might sound like a penal handbook, but the 'discipline' of the book's title actually refers to discipleship – the process of learning from and growing in the Spirit. The book describes both our faith – through the experience of Quakers – and our organisation – the structures and practices of our church and charity.

In September, hundreds of Quakers will descend upon the London borough of Newham to protest the set-up of the DSEI arms fair. DSEI 2021 featured over 1,600 exhibitors, including most of the biggest arms companies. This year is set to be no different.

9 voices the Department for Education would ban from schools
Recent Department for Education guidance tells headteachers in England to ensure external organisations, speakers and resources do not take "extremist" stances. These include a stated desire to abolish capitalism and "a failure to condemn illegal activities done in support of their cause". The guidance also bans "victim narratives that are harmful to British society".

The women of Swarthmoor Hall
Swarthmoor Hall in Lancashire was the centre of early Quakerism. It overcame raids by the local constabulary, complaints from the neighbours and a long-running dispute over ownership to provide an information hub, a safe haven for travelling Friends and a place for worship.

How are Quakers meeting? A summer snapshot from around Britain
A joy and privilege of my work is spending time in the lives of Quaker meetings. Over the last few months, I've seen Quakers respond creatively, faithfully and lovingly to the challenges presented by Covid-19. This has led to worship happening in ways most of us would scarcely have dreamt of a year ago.

Revising Quaker faith & practice: appointing the committee
Last year Quakers decided to revise Quaker faith & practice, our book of discipline. This isn't just a case of looking at the current book and changing the odd word here and there, adding a section or two about new topics, and removing anything that seems outdated. It also won't be an exercise (as suggested in some media coverage) of going through and crossing out every reference to God!
