In December 2018, I launched a survey for Quakers in Britain on diversity. Using the material gathered from questions sent to meetings and committees by Meeting for Sufferings and the individual data gathered from the survey, I've been building a picture of Quaker communities across Britain. The survey had 2,011 responses (roughly 10% of all Quakers in Britain) and has generated rich and varied information, in terms of actual diversity and attitudes to it. I make no claims of representation. It is a self-selecting sample.

Quakers have always diligently written tracts, pamphlets and books, including those about sexuality. Work to produce Towards a Quaker View of Sex began in 1957, and it was published in 1963. It was the first religious text to positively explore same-sex relationships, stating: “It is the nature and quality of a relationship that matters… The same criteria seem to us to apply whether a relationship is heterosexual or homosexual."

I was a teenager when I first read Harvey Gillman's book, A Minority of One. At the time of writing it, Harvey was Outreach Secretary for Quaker Home Service (as it was then) and at the time of reading, I was a spiritually grumpy trainee journalist, confused by churches of all denominations who preached of God's love – but only for those who were heterosexual. For the rest of us who weren't, we were either vilified or ignored.
