I have attended the national commemoration to mark International Holocaust Memorial Day in London for several years. It is a deeply moving event and each time it manages to explore not only what happened in Europe to many Jewish, gay, disabled, Roma and communist people in the Holocaust, but also reminds us all of the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

I was a teenager when I first read Harvey Gillman's book, A Minority of One. At the time of writing it, Harvey was Outreach Secretary for Quaker Home Service (as it was then) and at the time of reading, I was a spiritually grumpy trainee journalist, confused by churches of all denominations who preached of God's love – but only for those who were heterosexual. For the rest of us who weren't, we were either vilified or ignored.

Weirdly, I found myself agreeing when hearing retired Major General Tim Cross on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, saying that army recruitment is "not about being nice", it's about "fighting power" against the "Queen's enemies". This nakedly militarist agenda at least has the merit of honesty. The General has been irked by the fresh crop of British Army ads.Marketing the military is a difficult business, with recruitment rates stalling (PDF). But the marketers seem to have settled on 'belonging' as the army's selling point. I'd like to call out the lie.

The sanctity of human life is one of the fundamentals of a Christian society and can in no circumstances be set aside. Last weekend marked a turning point in British race relations. The controversial statue of Edward Colston was dumped in Bristol harbour, finally toppled at a Black Lives Matter demonstration. It was met with scorn from British newspapers, citing the age and expense of the statue as reasons for it to be reinstated, which reflects a deeper concern for property than for the oppression of black people in Britain.
