Women's preaching still justified

Updated 31 March 2026

Margaret Fell (1614-1702) was a key figure in the development of the early Quaker movement, handling money, letters, and practical support for people who felt led to preach the Quaker message. Quakers were criticised for allowing women to speak, and so – while she was in prison for allowing a Quaker meeting to be held in her home – Fell wrote a pamphlet, Women's speaking justified. In it she went through Biblical examples to show that women could, and always had, shared the word of God.

Others have been involved in school strikes, anti-fracking action and activism with the growing Extinction Rebellion movement. It's also important to remember that the sustainability we might call for in other areas of our lives applies to our Quaker meetings and meeting houses as well. In my role I've come across many ways meetings are trying to make their properties more sustainable – and seen a lot of opportunities yet to be taken, too. Here are six ways to make a difference.

After the Gathering: 11 ways to live out our Quaker faith in the world

Updated 17 February 2020

I left Yearly Meeting Gathering with a sense of hope for the future. It took me a while to identify this, given that the daily news discourages a feeling as impertinent as hope. This Yearly Meeting Gathering was the culmination of a three-year arc looking at living out Quaker faith in the world, and it felt like many seeds for change were sown. Which of these seeds will grow? Which will take root? Which will flourish for years to come?

Updated 27 October 2017

There has been a groundswell of activism in 2017, as people respond to threats to women's rights, freedom of movement and our climate, among many other things. As the government are caught up in the detail of enacting Brexit, we're seeing a shift away from lobbying towards less conventional means of influencing Britain's course.
