What do Quakers say about Christmas?

6 December 2022, Online

All days are equal, and we should remember the birth of Jesus all year round. On this basis, early Quakers didn't celebrate Christmas. Today, many of us have to balance spiritual insights with social needs – what is Christmas for you?

Christmas is a significant date in the British social calendar. It has a Christian history, secular meanings, and can involve many things from family commitments to loneliness. This session is for anyone who wants to think through what Quakers can say about Christmas today, whether you already have your tree up or will not be participating in any Christmas traditions.

By hearing some thoughts about the role of Christmas today, and reflecting in small groups on our own experience, we'll spend our 90 minutes together exploring varied Quaker perspectives. Nobody will be expected to change their plans for this December, but the process might help you explain your choices to others in your life.
