Truth, misinformation and war
4 November - 12 December 2022, Online
Misinformation fuels conflict and war and is itself now a weapon of war. It is easily spread through social media and biased news channels. How do we untangle complex stories to find the truth? How can our testimony of Truth help us?
How do we understand how people create and believe narratives that foster violence and hate?
This course starts with an exploration of how our testimonies to peace, truth and equality speak to this issue. We will use case studies to build our skills to search for truth in complex and contested stories. We will also seek to understand the narratives of those who pursue war. Finally, we will look at ways in which we might challenge misinformation and the barriers to doing that.
The course will include written and visual materials and the live sessions are an integral part of the course. Apart from the live sessions, you can expect to spend 2-3 hours working through the materials. The third week will be a reading week – a chance to catch up or to explore a particular issue in more depth.
The date period given for the course is when you are expected to interact with the online material and discussion forum; you can work on this at any time to suit you. The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-21:00 (UK time) every Thursday (no session on 24 Nov) during this period.
