Researching Reparations: Central England Area Meeting

Quaker Meetings across Britain have begun to interrogate their Meetings' historic connections to structures of oppression and colonialism, including chattel slavery. This session explores Central England Area Meeting's research into these histories and its efforts to address their ongoing legacies among Friends today.
This 90-minute session will feature a presentation from some of the researchers of the Central England Area Meeting group detailing a sample of their findings as well as their experiences in conducting this work. Participants will learn how eighteenth-century industry in the Midlands, conducted by some prominent Quaker families, fed into supply chains underpinning the trafficking of people from Africa as well as the plantation economy in the Caribbean and North America.
Participants will also hear from the researchers about the importance of Quakers doing this work, the difficulties and challenges of this research poses, and why it is necessary for local Meetings to engage with these histories. No prior knowledge is required to attend.
