OCT 1

Quakers and the Afterlife

1 - 15 October 2026, Online

What happens after we die? Do we have a soul? And where does it go? In this session we explore what the Quaker Way has to say about death and the Great Beyond, and how our understanding of the Afterlife has changed over time.

Live zoom session every Thursday19:00-21:00

Contemporary Quakers often struggle to speak together about the ultimate meaning of life and death, and may well have fundamentally different beliefs about what happens to us after death. In contrast, early Friends had a strong sense of living with or alongside Heaven (and sometimes Hell). They had a firm conviction that death was not the end, and that their finite lives were part of a great spiritual journey which included the past, the present and the future. In this session, we'll consider:

  • The theological differences between Early and Modern Friends
  • Evolving Quaker understandings of bodies and souls
  • The sources of contemporary reticence regarding the afterlife
  • Ways to support each other in opening up about the afterlife.
  • Learners will have the opportunity to explore their own attitudes to the afterlife, and have space to unearth some of the complexities of speaking about Heaven and souls, immortality and eternity in Quaker settings.
