SEP 9

From Spontaneity To Structure

9 - 30 September 2025, Online

Early Quaker worship was spontaneous, occurring only when Friends felt moved by the Spirit. How, then, did Quaker worship evolve into structured, scheduled Meetings, as seen in many Friends' communities today?

In this course, participants will learn about the origins of the Quaker Meeting system in the 1670s and its development as Quakerism expanded abroad. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the specific needs of the community the Meeting system was intended to address, as well as the conflicts and schisms within the faith that formed as a result.

This course will be delivered through four live sessions with accompanying materials which participants will be encouraged to work through on a weekly basis. There will also be an online discussion forum to enable discussion of the material with the tutor and other participants.
