Cancelled: BLM 2021 Racial Justice workshop

15 June - 20 July 2021, Online

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we've made the difficult decision to cancel this course. Registered participants have been contacted about this directly and will be kept informed if we are able to reschedule the course for another time.

We're a year on from the murder of George Floyd.

Historically, Derek Chauvin has been convicted. After the explosion in protests last summer, the Black Lives Matter movement is still growing. In the UK the Sewell report has been met with widespread criticism. Grenfell survivors are being blamed whilst they remain unhoused.

Are you thinking, "What is the Black Lives Matter movement?" or "What about All Lives Matter?"

"The UK doesn't seem to have as bad a problem with police violence and racism compared to the US"

"But racism isn't so bad today. Slavery was abolished and Quakers did lots of good work there"

"How do we build collective power to build a just and peaceful world? How can we live the testimonies of Equality, Justice and Peace in the context we find ourselves in now?"

If any of the above ring true then this is a workshop for you, Friends.

"One cannot be passively nonracist in a society whose very economy has been structured on a racist past"

- Jeff Hitchcock, quoted in the 2019 publication Race and Privilege in Europe (PDF) from Quaker Council for European Affairs (QCEA)

Workshops

In this workshop we will gather to learn together, to act together, including:

  • the Black Lives Matter movement, institutional racism and the UK context
  • what is whiteness, white supremacy? What is colonialism and will it ever end?
  • what are the theological and spiritual underpinnings of racial justice and allyship?
  • how can we act for racial justice?

This 6-week online workshop will be facilitated by Quakers in Britain, with support from Woodbrooke. It is open to people of all colours and backgrounds. It will take place on Zoom, with all times below at British Summertime. There is a pre-workshop required reading list, which will be sent to you following your registration confirmation. We will discuss the readings in the first session.

Week 1: 1–3pm Tuesday 15 June
Week 2: 1–3pm Tuesday 22 June
Week 3: 1–3pm Tuesday 29 June
Week 4: 1–3pm Tuesday 6 July
Week 5: 1–3pm Tuesday 13 July
Week 6: 1–3pm Tuesday 20 July

As this is a learning journey which we will go on as a community, a commitment to all sessions is required.
