1656 and All That: The Second Period of Quakerism

The course brings together some of the leading experts on James Nayler and the first and second periods of Quakerism. Each week features a guest lecture, with space for questions, discussion, and shared reflection. Participants will have the opportunity to explore fresh perspectives on this formative period of Quaker history.
Scholars have debated when the second period of Quakerism started. Some say 1666 or 1660, whilst others think it was much earlier. What was the detail of what was going on for Friends in the 1650s and in what ways did they need to adapt the public expression of their faith in order to survive and grow? How can we best characterise the 'second period'?
Through lectures, discussion, and reflection, participants will consider the challenges, controversies, and innovations that shaped Quakerism in its early decades.
