Updated 17 April 2020

Quakers in Britain's national organisation – Britain Yearly Meeting has furloughed a significant number of staff in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. The lockdown measures introduced in the UK and other countries to contain the outbreak have severely reduced its income and limited the scope for delivering many aspects of its work.

Updated 15 November 2018

In the chaotic months before the outbreak of World War II, Jewish people were in desperate need of help to escape German-occupied Europe. Quakers were among those who responded, creating the Kindertransport to bring children to safety and persuading the government to amend visa requirements. Tangled roots: personal reflections on the Swarthmore Lecture

Updated 22 May 2026

In the recent Swarthmore lecture, I explored how the complex mix of characteristics visible in the early Quaker movement continue to present us with important challenges and dilemmas today. In doing this, I didn't really talk about my personal response to these issues. However, in the book to accompany the lecture, I offer a number of personal reflections. In this blog, I will touch on some of these observations and share four short passages from the book, in the hope that this will encourage reflection not only about how the lecture relates to the Quaker way generally, but also to our individual experiences as Friends.

How Quakers in Devon secured a home for people seeking refuge

Updated 3 December 2021

People travelling to the UK today in search of sanctuary are making journeys that take them across land and sea, and are too often greeted with hostility and violence. This continues to be the sad reality for many people seeking sanctuary from war, climate breakdown, exploitation and poverty – all too often a legacy of colonialism in their countries of origin. Quakers involved in countering the UK government's own 'hostile environment' policies know that it is essential to provide refugees with safe homes where they can live and recover.

Lighting the way: Quaker witness in troubled times

Updated 18 December 2025

Another year gone by, that felt so quick. It was another eventful year of difficult moments - with conflicts, political tension, and financial uncertainty all around us. As I write this blog, I often ask myself: how do we keep the light of hope and faith alive? I struggle to convey a positive message, given the state of the world. However, I try to look at the small achievements and the breadth of work we do to keep that sliver of positivity alight.
