Policies that show generosity towards asylum seekers make some European politicians very nervous, which is why some of what we have seen in Europe in the last few days is so remarkable. The deportation of asylum seekers is being suspended (Germany), immigration detainees are being released (Italy), homeless people are being housed (France), and some are being given temporary asylum (Portugal).

Despite the welcome release of many detainees in response to the Covid-19 crisis, the UK's immigration detention system remains unfit for purpose. The UK remains the only country in Europe where detainees can be held indefinitely. This violates basic principles of justice and human rights while avoiding proper transparency and judicial oversight. Anyone with 'irregular status' can be detained – new arrivals, people with no papers or 'wrong passports', and overstayers. Tens of thousands of people are being locked up every year – without any idea of when they might be released.

Recent Department for Education guidance tells headteachers in England to ensure external organisations, speakers and resources do not take "extremist" stances. These include a stated desire to abolish capitalism and "a failure to condemn illegal activities done in support of their cause". The guidance also bans "victim narratives that are harmful to British society".

Embracing diversity?
In December 2018, I launched a survey for Quakers in Britain on diversity. Using the material gathered from questions sent to meetings and committees by Meeting for Sufferings and the individual data gathered from the survey, I've been building a picture of Quaker communities across Britain. The survey had 2,011 responses (roughly 10% of all Quakers in Britain) and has generated rich and varied information, in terms of actual diversity and attitudes to it. I make no claims of representation. It is a self-selecting sample.

I've been working in the children and young people's team since 2005 and I still remember the day I was interviewed. A beautiful sunny day in a really big dark room with a grandfather clock. But it's one of the interview questions that has really stuck with me – how are you going to work to explore spirituality with young Quakers?

Quakers have always diligently written tracts, pamphlets and books, including those about sexuality. Work to produce Towards a Quaker View of Sex began in 1957, and it was published in 1963. It was the first religious text to positively explore same-sex relationships, stating: “It is the nature and quality of a relationship that matters… The same criteria seem to us to apply whether a relationship is heterosexual or homosexual."
