Climate chaos is deepening, and so are the chasms of economic inequality and social division. We desperately need a transition away from fossil fuels that is fast, fair and properly funded. We know that the costs of climate inaction would be catastrophic, in financial, ecological and human terms. And yet we are hearing increasingly strident voices claiming that we cannot afford to act.

The Santa Marta conference opens in Colombia on Friday 24 April. I was glad when it was announced at the end of the COP30 climate talks in Brazil, last November, as a way for countries that are serious about getting off fossil fuels quickly and fairly to plan how to do it together – without getting bogged down at COP with the likes of Russia and Saudi Arabia. It'll report back to COP but offers a faster path.

Margaret Fell (1614-1702) was a key figure in the development of the early Quaker movement, handling money, letters, and practical support for people who felt led to preach the Quaker message. Quakers were criticised for allowing women to speak, and so – while she was in prison for allowing a Quaker meeting to be held in her home – Fell wrote a pamphlet, Women's speaking justified. In it she went through Biblical examples to show that women could, and always had, shared the word of God.

Quakers have always diligently written tracts, pamphlets and books, including those about sexuality. Work to produce Towards a Quaker View of Sex began in 1957, and it was published in 1963.
