Launching the Exeter Pound
The Exeter Pound, which we launched in autumn 2015, is a sterling backed local paper currency which can be spent only in local businesses. A local currency can bring custom to local independent businesses, shorten supply chains, and promote a more integrated and sustainable local economy.

Wheel Stop Trident
Around 14 young people, most with a Quaker background, formed Wheel Stop Trident in early 2015. Since then, we've pedalled cheerfully from London to Reading, and from Trident-linked arms company offices to Parliament, calling for the government to scrap Trident and spend the £100 billion on services that ensure true security.

At the crossroads of climate justice and migrant rights
Across our Yearly Meeting, the issues of climate justice and migrant rights are live concerns. Although they are often carried forward by different groups of Friends, they are somehow held invisibly together within our Quaker meetings. But in our wider communities, efforts to tackle these two issues aren't often unified, and it means that climate campaigning can sometimes feed into unintended harm on migrant issues.

Finance and false solutions at COP29
The atmosphere during the recent climate change Conference of Parties 29 (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, at times felt ominous. Trust between countries, always fragile, received hard blows.

The long-term cost of war: how sending landmines to Ukraine undermines the fight for a mine-free future
After I spoke on the radio back in 2023 about peace and pacifism in the context of the war in Ukraine, I had a Quaker get in touch with me. One problem with war, he said, was its corrupting nature "even on those whose cause, like the Ukrainians, is just". Over time, groups and countries can start to use tactics that they earlier condemned, such as the use of landmines.

Exploring the edges of something new: the Quaker Earthcare Gathering seeks ways forward on climate
Within the Quaker community, there is agreement on the significance of the climate crisis, and a range of views about what we should do. Over 100 Quakers came together to explore what they, individually and collectively, might be called to do next.

And Still We Rise: building collective action in the face of multiple crises
'And Still We Rise' brought together almost 1000 people and 100 speakers from 25 different countries around the world. It was the latest event in a long tradition of hosting movements for social justice at Friends House. A tradition of movement generosity (i.e. thinking about how those with space and resources can share what they have with movements to build a peaceful and sustainable world) which Quakers in Britain is committed to practising.

Lighting the way: Quaker witness in troubled times
Another year gone by, that felt so quick. It was another eventful year of difficult moments - with conflicts, political tension, and financial uncertainty all around us. As I write this blog, I often ask myself: how do we keep the light of hope and faith alive? I struggle to convey a positive message, given the state of the world. However, I try to look at the small achievements and the breadth of work we do to keep that sliver of positivity alight.

Ending the fossil fuel era: 5 things the UK government can do in 2022
Today marks 100 days since the end of COP26. In his closing speech in Glasgow, COP26 President Alok Sharma told the world that the pledge to keep global temperature rises within 1.5°C "will only survive if we keep our promises; if we translate commitments into rapid action".100 days after those solemn words, what can be said about the UK's promises?

What the world needs from COP26
The UN climate talks in Glasgow are reaching a crucial point, with negotiations due to finish on Friday (though they may run on into the weekend). We have seen an incredible coming together of movements in Glasgow and around the world to call for climate justice at COP26.
