Teach Peace Primary

The award-winning collection of school assemblies in the primary Teach Peace Pack, developed by the Peace Education Network, covers a rich range of peace themes with follow-up activities and materials. Whether we are Remembering for Peace (11 November), flying a kite for Nao Roz (21 March), or reflecting on the witness of Austrian peacemaker Franz Jägerstätter (21 May) the school year is full of opportunities to use this pack. Teach Peace Primary will help ensure peace is a key theme in our children's education and help you to celebrate peace and peacemakers in your school.

'This is a pack perfectly placed to ease fears, foster hope for the future and develop moral compasses." Global Dimension Teachers' Choice award.

Responding to military engagement in schools

Thousands of British primary schools are visited each year by the armed forces and even arms manufacturers. This resource offers guidance for schools to navigate military engagement and consider their duties to students. Responding to military engagement in schools encourages critical thinking and draws on advice from English, Welsh and Scottish governments regarding educational impartiality. It also explains where to find practical resources that can help introduce a range of perspectives, as well as the obligation to promote peace, tolerance and nonviolence (UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.7 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 29).

World War I learning resource: Conscience

Teaching about World War I should be about more than reciting poems about muddy battlefields. Conscience has been created to highlight a selection of moral paths taken as a result of the war. Learners pursue a critical thinking project, considering how people responded to the questions they faced and exploring their own reactions.

It provides opportunities to reflect on the steps we need to take for a world without war. These materials are based on the secondary resource Conviction, the work of Don Rowe, teacher, writer and leading proponent of Citizenship education.

'Conscience is a brilliant resource – fantastic for opinion sharing, debate, Circle Time and persuasive writing at KS2' Jacqui Page, Deputy Head, Holy Trinity Primary Academy

Fly Kites Not Drones

Fly Kites Not Drones brings together a range of learning materials about peace and human rights. The learning resource was made in Britain, but the inspiration comes from Afghanistan, a country that has known decades of war including armed drone strikes.

Inspired by Afghan Peace activists it explores children's rights issues raised by drone warfare. Learners explore these issues from varied points of view through drama and study and develop their ethical understanding of the issues. It also offers guidance for making and flying your own kite, which can be used to send a message of peace.

The resource is available at Fly Kites Not Drones website (offsite link)
