Chichester Quakers embrace inclusion, diversity and community
Friends in Chichester have this year joined their city's Pride celebrations, unveiling a new banner for the rainbow parade and welcoming visitors to a Quaker-themed stall.
Quakers of all ages took part in the day, either walking in the procession or being a welcoming presence at the stall, inviting passers-by to have a chat, take part in a Quaker history and nature quiz, or take a leaflet.
One particularly moving moment came before the parade began in Priory Park, when a passer-by saw the new Quaker banner and shared her appreciation for a church presence that openly welcomed LGBTQ+ people. “I love that," she said, looking at the banner, "I grew up in a church which didn't allow it".
"It's important that we're known as an LGBTQ+ affirming faith community with values rooted in equality and equity," said Nicola Gibberd, the Local Development Worker for Kent, Sussex and Surrey, "and attending Pride is one way of making ourselves more visible whilst also having loads of fun!"
There are still more than 50 Pride events taking place across Britain between this weekend and mid-October. There are free Quaker Pride resources on the website here including badges, stickers, and leaflets that can help to start a conversation.
If you've not had a presence at Pride before and would like some support, please get in touch with your Local Development Worker or your Youth Development Worker who can guide you in the right direction.
