Coming together in a ‘loud silence’ for peace

Plans are underway for a national silent walking vigil for peace in London on 19 September. Join us as we come together with those from other faiths in a worshipful prayer.

At this time of continued international conflict and heightened political tensions, it feels more pertinent than ever that the longstanding Quaker testimony in service of peace is given space to heal the wider world. What can we do to manifest peace, in the face of destructive global systems and oppressive violence? Often, the first step might be to put our faith in the transformative power of prayerful action.

This is why Quakers and those from other faiths from across the country are gathering in Central London on 19 September, for a silent walking vigil for peace. We will express our call for peace through a 'loud', unified silence, showing our solidarity and care for those impacted by violence, conflict and war across the world. As we walk together, we will follow, in our own small way, the long lineage of pilgrims for peace, who have traversed all continents of the world to call for an end to oppression in all its forms.

This is the way of peace – overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred with love.

Planning to come already?

Register your attendance to let the organising team know how many will be there to join us. We are also still looking for volunteers to help hold the vigil on the day. There is a need for stewards, elders and pastoral Friends – no previous experience required! Are you able to serve the vigil in this way? Then please register your interest on the sign up form and the team will be in touch.

Hold us in the Light

Join for our monthly meeting for worship to uphold the call for peace as we move closer to the vigil itself. From 6pm on Monday 10 August and Monday 14 September. Please email Rita at RitaS@quaker.org.uk to receive the Zoom link.

Can't make it to London?

If you cannot make it to London on the day, why not show solidarity by organising a local vigil in your area? It could be anything from 30 minutes to a whole day of stillness. Email faithinaction@quaker.org.uk to let us know your plans and use this resource or order some peace postcards to hand out to passersby.

Make it a peaceful weekend!

If you want to join more action for peace, Quaker Roots are organising an event the day before the vigil, calling on Clarion to end their involvement with the biennial DSEI Arms Fair. Join them at 1pm, outside Clarion HQ, on Friday 18 September. Join the online preparation event on the 10 September, and register for updates for the official action.
