Nurturing the spiritual life of our communities

Updated 22 December 2022

I am somebody who reflects on what is nourishing me spiritually quite regularly. Whether it be wild swimming, singing in harmony or a windy walk on the moors, I find a range of activities help fill up my spiritual cup. Quaker worship is an important part of my spiritual life and it is where I am part of an intergenerational community. I feel lucky that a large part of my role as a Local Development Worker is supporting Friends to ask the question 'what are we finding spiritually nourishing' – not as individuals but as a whole Quaker community.

Join the JustMoney Movement

Updated 17 February 2023

The cost of living crisis – hot on the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic – has us all talking more about money. The price of food in the shops, the cost of our public services, the vast inequalities in our society. Money is a hot topic – but it can be hard to know where to start in understanding finance and economics, let alone doing anything about it.

Taking my seat again: four years being Churches Together in England's 'Empty Chair' President

Updated 7 September 2023

Four and a half years ago I set up a blog. It was to be called 'Adventures in Ecumenism' and I was planning to explore and share my work as one of the Presidents of Churches Together in England. Sadly, this turned out to be horribly premature: I was not able to take up the role of Fourth President of CTE. Having instead just finished my role as convenor of the Fourth Presidency Group of churches, I'm looking back at that time, what's happened since, and the impacts – both harmful and hopeful – that emerged from that decision.

Why, on this International Peace Day, we’re talking about climate justice

Updated 28 October 2024

21 September marks the International Day of Peace and the start of the first ever Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice; an initiative which Quakers in Britain have been coordinating with an international network of organisations. This year, peace and climate justice movements will be coming together in recognition of their shared vision of a world in which human and natural life can thrive.

A path to a better future: David Gray writes from Brummana High School in Lebanon

Updated 13 February 2025

Lebanon is in a dilapidated state today, as indeed it has been for several years. It has suffered from a series of catastrophes: the overthrow of its government in 2019, the Beirut explosion of 2020, and the overwhelming economic collapse of 2019. This continues until today with rates of inflation still running at 190% and capital controls in the banks which have seen many people lose their entire life savings and, if they had them, their occupational pensions reduced to 5% of their actual value. For us in Lebanon the pandemic and subsequent lockdown were just another event but  perhaps had less impact and preserved the peace in a way which would not be understood in the West.
