At the same time as my granddaughter joined a school cadet force, in order to complete her A-Levels, Armed Forces Day loomed large. On investigating the educational resources available to schools from the armed forces, I realised there needed to be peace resources just as well-produced and relating to curriculum and syllabus, as a balance.

On Saturday 9 December campaigners gathered outside the Ministry of Defence to celebrate the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. We were there to celebrate the efforts of campaigners from across the globe in achieving the landmark UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. But also to challenge the UK government's lack of support for the ban. This is a historic treaty and an important step on the road towards nuclear disarmament.

The question of nuclear arms is stuck in a rut. As recently as the 2019 General Election campaign, any budding prime minister had to be prepared to be asked whether they would press the hypothetical nuclear button. The vast majority of party leaders affirmed their readiness to use nuclear weapons, and those who would not do so were quickly labelled as unelectable, or without backbone. In effect, the question of using nuclear weapons has ceased to be a question – it's been reduced to a litmus test: are you 'man' enough, or not, to hold the lives of hundreds of millions people in your nuclear-armed hands?
