The changing shape of Quaker meetings

Updated 8 April 2022

Our Tabular Statement is the annual report of all Quakers in Britain, the closest thing Quakers have to a census. Every year, area meetings send in a report which shares the overall numbers of members and attenders, and the changes that meetings have recorded in the previous twelve months.

Inspiring the journey to COP26

Updated 8 April 2021

The UN climate talks, COP26, will take place in Glasgow in November this year. The focus is on 'Uniting the World to Tackle Climate Change'. It is of global significance.Of course, I have always been aware that climate change is something I should take seriously but, to be truthful, I had done very little. However, in January 2020 I experienced the catastrophic outcome of a severe summer drought in Australia. Suddenly climate change became personal.

Updated 19 May 2021

The sixth session of the Scottish Parliament has now begun. While a great deal of coverage of the election has focussed on the prospect of a second independence referendum, there are other issues we should expect to see on the political horizon.

6 actions you can take for Palestine and Israel

Updated 10 June 2021

We welcomed with deep relief the end to the recent round of bombing in Gaza and firing of rockets into Israel. But while the world's attention may have moved on, the violence and structural oppression of the military occupation of Palestine has not ended and the struggle for equal rights continues.

Our shared world won't wait

Updated 26 November 2021

When talking to students about COP26, I'll have to tell them honestly that, while I don't fully understand the deal, it feels like a disappointment for supporters of climate justice. Prioritising optics over action, rich countries trumpeted their alarm, but enabled more pollution with impunity at the expense of the world's poorest people.

Quakers and their meeting houses

Updated 12 January 2022

Writing a book is a strange thing to do at the best of times. I'm someone who is used to writing, but usually in short bursts of perhaps a couple of thousand words. To sign up to produce a book of 50 or 60 thousand words with 200 illustrations is quite daunting.

It's late, but we need to talk. According to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, it is 90 seconds to midnight. High time for a national debate about nuclear weapons.

Your faith, your will

Updated 8 August 2023

When I was in my late 20s, I managed to buy my small London flat. It was the late 90s and it was still possible to buy a flat on a charity worker's salary. I felt for the first time that I might have something of value to pass on to others – not only did I have the flat, but I also had a great collection of books, a musical instrument and one beautiful limited edition print I had bought at an art fair.

Phasing out fossil fuels: the political dynamics of COP28

Updated 19 December 2023

Tens of thousands of people are flying in and out of the mega desert city Dubai to attend the 28th Conference of Parties (COP) on climate change. The setting is poignant; a once deeply poor, colonised land, now an oil rich country capable of quickly building a surreally unsustainable city.

Teach Peace Secondary: a timely education resource

Updated 26 April 2024

There's growing concern among teachers about peace. This was evident at this year's National Education Union (NEU) conference. "Children should not pay the price of war", said Daniel Kebede, NEU General Secretary, after delegates passed a motion on Palestine and Israel. "More children have been killed in Gaza in four months than in four years of worldwide wars."
