Following 'The Big One' Extinction Rebellion protest in London in April, a Quaker told me that the real challenge wasn't the protest – it was coming home.

On 24 January, the head of the British army, General Sir Patrick Sanders stated that the country should train a "citizen army" ready to fight a land war in the future. Prompted by the threat from Russia and similar steps being taken by other European nations, he warned that an increase in reserves forces alone would "not be enough", and a future conflict would have to be a "whole-of-nation-undertaking".

24 February marks two years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and this anniversary reminds us to take stock of the enormous toll the war has taken. As well as those who have suffered death, injury or displacement in the war, this anniversary I'll be holding in my heart those who are courageously objecting to participating in it, or working for peace and nonviolent resistance, often at great risk.

'And Still We Rise' brought together almost 1000 people and 100 speakers from 25 different countries around the world. It was the latest event in a long tradition of hosting movements for social justice at Friends House. A tradition of movement generosity (i.e. thinking about how those with space and resources can share what they have with movements to build a peaceful and sustainable world) which Quakers in Britain is committed to practising.

Arriving at the UN climate change talks (COP29) in Azerbaijan, a clarion of trumpets and beating drums echoed from large speakers, heralding the entrance to the conference complex. Listening each morning reminded me of the insistent and repeated demands from civil society and observers calling for just and equitable climate finance.

For the past few months, the Quaker Support for Climate Action group has joined the Zero Hour campaign encouraging support for the Climate and Nature Bill (formerly the Climate Ecology and Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill). The leading to take this action comes from a deep and urgent sense that, if we don't take action now, it will be too late.
