The courage of our convictions

Updated 7 January 2016

Over the past two years South East Scotland Friends have been developing a concern about increasing militarisation in society. We heard that Edinburgh was to be a focus for Armed Forces Day, and thought it would be a good opportunity to make our concern more public. We planned a joint witness with the Scottish Peace Network.

Joining Quakers on the People’s March for Climate, Justice & Jobs

Updated 7 March 2016

I try to make decisions in my life that respect and support the environment. But no matter what I do or how much I challenge myself, I can't change things on a scale big enough to solve the problem of climate change. I can't change everything by changing myself.Marches are an opportunity to stand up and say 'I want change'. They're an opportunity to be visible. When thousands of people march, it sends a message that society cares.

Blue marble minute for the climate

Updated 20 January 2016

My concern was, and is, that governments will fail to act to stop carbon dioxide emissions before it is too late. This led to the idea that if world leaders were held in the Light daily at 21:00, for one minute, they would find the courage to resist the huge fossil fuel lobby, and take life-saving decisions to halt climate change at the international negotiations in Paris (COP21).

Taking action in Paris at COP21

Updated 19 January 2016

We're now facing a climate crisis. I felt it was important to go to Paris because I feared that the climate negotiations (or COP21) would not be sufficient to meet this crisis. I've been led to take action on climate change because it's an issue so inextricably linked to other things I care about, like challenging militarism and upholding refugee and asylum seeker rights.
