Last weekend marked a turning point in British race relations. The controversial statue of Edward Colston was dumped in Bristol harbour, finally toppled at a Black Lives Matter demonstration. It was met with scorn from British newspapers, citing the age and expense of the statue as reasons for it to be reinstated, which reflects a deeper concern for property than for the oppression of black people in Britain.

Reflecting on this past twelve months, none of us can claim that people of faith or faith communities have done more or differently than anyone else. All of us, of every faith and none, have longed for connection. We've joined with others and served our neighbours and our communities. We've lost loved ones. We've grieved for our own lost hopes. We've fretted and wept through the long night, and struggled to find the will to get up in the morning and begin the new day. We've held in our grief like a caught breath, waiting to weep. The spaces between us feel filled with ghosts and memories and things lost.

Each year a different country is selected to write the liturgy for a worldwide day of prayer and England, Wales and Northern Ireland had been chosen for 2022; the first time since 1945. WDP is an international ecumenical women's movement which began in the USA in 1887 and is celebrated annually in over 150 countries.

This is a significant milestone in the journey towards ensuring the wellbeing of every child in the nation, and builds on years of advocacy by organisations including Quakers in Scotland and our coalition partners Together (the Scottish Alliance for Children's Rights).
