An Angelic Trouble-Maker: The Life of Bayard Rustin
7 August - 4 September 2025
This course will explore the life and work of Bayard Rustin, a Black Quaker and a leading figure in the African-American movement for Civil Rights in the mid 20th-century. How can he help us to be a “group of angelic troublemakers" today?
Over the five weeks we will discuss Rustin's life and work, with particular attention to his testimony and witness as a Black Quaker in the 20th-century movement for Civil Rights in the United States.
Each live session will include a brief lecture, with space for a question and answer period, and opportunities for dialogue and reflection about our own witness in the world. Students will be encouraged to read Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin. However, it is not required.
