Quakers in Britain are looking for a school to become a centre of excellence in peer-led conflict resolution.

We are currently looking for a secondary school to partner with to introduce a new peer-led conflict resolution scheme. This is an exciting opportunity for a school to develop their restorative practice with young people at the heart. Young people will be trained, supported and empowered to mediate between their peers as well as given the opportunity to go on to train younger students as mediators.

Benefits for the partner secondary school

Students will be trained in a conflict resolution such as peer mediation or restorative practice.

Through this project, nominated students will develop:

    • their own understanding of conflict and conflict resolution
    • listening, empathy and mediation skills
    • leadership skills
    • confidence and self-efficacy

The selected school will be provided with:

    • high quality on-site and remote support throughout the project
    • training for all staff in restorative principles and how peer mediation can contribute to reduced harmful conflict
    • training for all Year 12 students in conflict and mediation
    • training for selected Year 12 students in peer mediation
    • support for Year 12 to deliver training to Year 10 and Year 5 in feeder schools
    • support in capturing and sharing best practice with others
    • a contribution towards staffing costs to support the successful implementation of the scheme (c.£3k)

    Project outline

The project will have five stages:

Stage 1: all Year 12 students given the opportunity to attend a workshop on conflict and mediation

Stage 2: selected Year 12 students train as peer mediators

Stage 3: Year 12 establish a peer mediation scheme

Stage 4: Year 12 mediators train Year 10 students to join the team

Stage 5: Year 12 mediators train Year 5 students in at least 2 feeder primary schools to be peer mediators

The chosen schools will get an opportunity to input into how these five stages would look in their school context.

    Criteria

We are looking for a school who:

    • have a sixth form and are committed to giving their Year 12 students the opportunity to develop the above skills
    • can build an effective working relationship with at least two feeder primary schools
    • are committed to developing their relational and restorative practice
    • are committed to developing youth leadership opportunities
    • have leadership capacity to support, implement and sustain the scheme. The scheme will require the equivalent of around 18 days of staff time across the academic year.
    • are willing to share the knowledge, skills and experiences they develop with other schools across the country
