World Quaker Day on Sunday 2 October brings together the global Quaker community – and falls in the ninth British Quaker Week. Quaker meetings around England, Scotland and Wales are opening their doors with a warm welcome, offering music and art, drama and discussion, worship and witness.

This week Quakers are marking the anniversary of the devastation wrought on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by World War II nuclear bombs. One hundred years ago Quakers were on a different battlefield, among courageous conscientious objectors rescuing the dying and wounded at the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in World War I.

Soaring house prices, welfare cuts and loss of social housing have sparked a housing crisis. For Quakers at Yearly Meeting it was a hot topic and now they are questioning peers who are beginning a line by line examination of The Housing and Planning Bill in the House of Lords.
Quakers in Britain say this Bill is a missed opportunity for the government to reduce inequality in the housing system. Instead it will increase inequality between those who are home-owners and those who are not.

Benefit cuts to change behaviour are unpopular, ineffective and immoral, say Churches. Quakers in Britain, along with Church Action on Poverty, the Church of Scotland, the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Methodist Church, the Scottish Episcopal Church, and the United Reformed Church are warning that the Welfare Reform and Work Bill marks a dangerous shift away from a core principle of the welfare state and will make poor people even poorer.

Quakers in Britain was one of 20 organisations who signed a letter in The Daily Telegraph today outlining our concerns on welfare reform. Parliament is currently considering the Welfare Reform and Work Bill, which proposes a raft of further cuts to our social security system.
