Quakers win Good Egg Award
21 May 2009
The Quaker conference centre, Friends House, has been awarded the Good Egg award. Compassion in World Farming (CWI) says the Quakers are the first Christian group to receive the award. To win, Friends House, just across the road from London’s Euston Station, had to show commitment to using only cage-free eggs in its thriving restaurant, café and conference facilities.
Paul Grey, head of Friends House Hospitality (FHH) says: “As Quakers we respect the world around us. Our customers can be sure that means we do all we can to minimise our impact on the environment. We always look for fairly traded and organic options. We are looking forward to working with CWI on other initiatives to show our commitment to good animal welfare.”
Marian Hussenbux, clerk of Quaker Concern for Animals (QCA) is excited by the award. “We are all interconnected in the web of life,” she says. “People should not ration their compassion to humans and it is right that Quakers should lead by example.”
The award was presented on 14 May by Philip Lymbery, chief executive of Compassion in World Farming, when the 34 UK winners gathered in the House of Commons.
