Quaker peaceworker scheme
What is the work about?
Each year, Britain Yearly Meeting recruits seven or eight people who want an opportunity to apply their commitment to working for peace, and funds a placement for each of them with an organisation working on an aspect of peace in the UK or overseas.
Why does it matter?
Compared with the environment, human rights and development campaigns, peace is a poor relation amongst civil society movements. It needs strengthening if all the others are to progress and it is an area in which Quakers have very long experience. The peaceworker scheme springs from the Quaker peace testimony and offers us a valuable opportunity to support like-minded individuals and organisations.
Who benefits from the work?
Finding opportunities to put your faith into practice through your work for peace can be tough. We provide an additional way in for people who are passionate about peace, many of whom cite this experience as their first step into longer involvement in this work.
We also boost the capacity of small organisations doing great work by giving them an extra pair of hands for a year. And the whole scheme builds links between people and organisations throughout the peace movement, helping them to work together effectively on a whole range of peace topics.
