Promoting peace in Northern Uganda

Boy peering through hole in materialMore than 2 million people have been forced to flee their homes in a 20 year conflict which has devastated northern Uganda. The rebel Lord's Resistance Army has abducted over 26,000 children and forced them to fight, used them as sex slaves or forced them to carry looted goods.

Military efforts by the government of Uganda to defeat the LRA have failed, and political initiatives for a peaceful reconciliation have been hampered by serious questions about how LRA fi ghters, whether leaders or abductees, can be brought back into communities affected by the conflict.

For over six years, we have worked with courageous local peacemakers, including a group of girls who have escaped from abduction by the LRA. We support them in their efforts to bring a lasting end to the conflict and rebuild their communities. We also give local Ugandan groups a voice at an international level, ensuring that the United Nations and Western governments back peace initiatives which have local support.
