Peace education workshops to expand in 2010

Five Quaker schools held peace education days during Quaker Week 2009, inviting young people from local state schools to participate. Members of the Peace Education Network and Turning the Tide Resource People provided workshops on peace-related topics, including conflict resolution, nonviolent direct action, nuclear weapons and fair trade.

The workshops were engaging and solution-focused. The emphasis was on encouraging students to be active citizens by sharing some of the tools necessary for them to be agents for change in their schools, communities and the wider world.

The peace education days were organised in partnership with the Peace Education Network and QSPW’s Peace Education Advisory Programme (PEAP). The primary aim of PEAP is to create a culture of peace and justice, based on nonviolent change, by encouraging and supporting spiritual development and learning in all schools and other educational environments. Quaker Week is a part of this, but we would like to be able to respond throughout the year to the requirements of individual schools in a way that works for them.

We are organising training in 2010 to equip Friends to provide peace education locally, either by working directly with schools or by organising events in their meeting houses. If you would like to take part please express your interest early to ensure that training sessions go ahead.

A ‘Speakers for Free’ list, detailing the organisations that provide peace education sessions, is available on the Education section of the Britain Yearly Meeting website: www.quaker.org.uk/education. Some of these organisations have limited resources, so not every booking request can be accommodated.
