A legacy makes a real difference to Quaker work

Every donation we receive makes a difference to Quaker work, and a gift in your will is among the very best ways to support the Society’s work into the future.

Bertram ChapmanJean ChapmanJean and Bertram Chapman, longstanding Friends from Antrobus in Cheshire, chose to do just that. Bertram died in 1990, and when Jean died recently their daughter Eleanor got in touch to tell us that they had left a legacy to the work of the Society.

“My father believed in finding your own way, working out your own belief-system and taking responsibility for your actions,” explains Eleanor.

As a scientist with ICI during World War II, Bertram was in a reserved occupation, but his wartime experiences gave him a great commitment to promoting peace.

He volunteered at the Manchester International Club, supporting refugees and foreign students. There he met Jean, who had trained as a teacher, and had a particular passion for education.

Raised in different Christian traditions, Jean and Bertram came to Friends after they married, and they found a spiritual home at Antrobus Quaker Meeting in Cheshire. Eleanor tells us that Bertram and Jean found great value in the “peaceful thinking space” of meeting for worship, and Jean was particularly supportive of the children’s meeting.

When they made a will, the couple decided to include a gift to Quaker Peace & Social Witness. Jean and Bertram’s gift will help QPSW in all its work in years to come, including its Turning the Tide nonviolence teaching and learning programme; its peacebuilding work in regions affected by violent conflict; its economic issues work, calling for a fairer world economy; its peaceworker programme, which strengthens the peace movement and supports the work of the Quaker United Nations Office to uphold the rights of refugees and marginalised people; and much more.
