The fire safety law changed in October 2006. The new law:

  • Makes it your responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone who uses your premises and in the immediate vicinity
  • Emphasises preventing fires and reducing risk
  • Does away with the need for fire certificates
  • Applies to virtually all premises including places of worship
  • Requires you to carry out Fire Safety Risk Assessments

A set of guides has been developed by the government to tell you what you have to do to comply with fire safety law, help you to carry out a fire risk assessment and identify the general fire precautions you need to have in place.

It is suggested that the following will be appropriate for most Meetings.

  • Entry Level Guide - A short Guide to making your premises safe from fire
  • Guide 6 - Small & Medium Places of Assembly

These guides and further information can be downloaded free at  http://www.firesafetyguides.communities.gov.uk/.

Should you be unable to download the guides contact Kevin Ellis at Friends House on 020 7663 1085 or kevine@quaker.org.uk and he will mail a hard copy to you.
