Eliminating World Poverty - June 2009

Quaker Peace & Social Witness stresses the importance of international development in its formal submission to a Department for International Development White Paper consultation. We also urge the UK Government to invest in preventing conflict and the threat of climate change. QPSW joined other free churches to make this submission as well as contributing less formally to submissions through other organisations.

The Department for International Development (DfID) is the part of the UK Government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty. In so doing DfID deals with issues such as conflict, trade and economic growth, climate change, health and education.

DfID was consulting on a new White Paper which will form the basis of future government policy on international development. The White Paper will have a major impact on how our government relates to developing countries on a wide range of issues; from delivering aid and emergency relief to issues like climate change, conflict prevention and the role of the United Nations and other intergovernmental institutions.

DfID white paper consultation - white papers and response

At this time of international economic upheaval when our government is pre-occupied with domestic concerns, it is particularly important that DfID hears that UK citizens remain concerned about development and about the impact of conflict and climate change in the developing world.

QPSW has completed it's written submission.
