Stemming from Quakers' challenge to answer 'that of God' in every person, QPSW is committed to working for peace and justice through nonviolent social change.

Nonviolence challenges war, violence and injustice by focusing on the root causes of oppressive use of power, fear and separation. It does not seek to evade conflict, but instead creates alternative approaches to enable conflict to be waged creatively and without harm.

The Quaker commitment to nonviolence and the vision that it represents is known as the 'Quaker peace testimony'.

As part of its South Asia programme, Quaker Peace & Social Witness has been funding and working alongside peace organisations and supporting networks in order to strengthen all of our capacities for peace. One of the organisations is Ekta Parishad. Its president, Rajagopal, was in Britain recently to talk about his vision. Anne van Staveren met him.

Building nonviolent networks

Quakers help build nonviolent networks in South Asia. We bring together grassroots groups from across the region, and help them learn from each other about nonviolent action for change.

This activity appeal pack can be used in all sorts of ways, from holding an event to celebrate the region complete with food and music to a more modest study group. Everyone can have a role in learning and telling others about different parts of the project.

Turning the Tide is a programme which trains people to use active nonviolence to confront situations of injustice effectively. Following the violence that marked the results of Kenya elections in 2007, Turning the Tide was invited by Kenyan Quakers to help teach nonviolent methods of working for change. With only two years until the next general election time is of the essence.
