Standing Alongside Civilians in Israel-Palestine

Quakers send teams of Ecumenical Accompaniers to Israel - Palestine to offer protection and support to communities on both sides. The accompaniers monitor human rights abuses, and make speaking tours on their return to share their experiences and give witness to what they have seen.

One of the biggest barriers to peace in the Israeli Palestinian conflict is the presence of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The settlements are illegal under international humanitarian law. They cause harm and poverty to Palestinians and are an obstacle to peace.

The international community, including the UK government and the European Union has repeatedly condemned the settlements. Yet, settlements have grown and prospered. And, despite their illegality, many countries are trading with them.

 Sunday morning, fresh with much needed rain, and hurrying clouds over the city promising more. The first day of the week, and a working day in this Jewish-Muslim-Christian city. It takes some getting used to, having Friday and Saturday as the weekend. One of the Arabic sentences set as an exercise for beginners like me says Why are you always so tired on Sunday? I am tired on Sunday because Friday and Saturday are my holidays. So language study drives forward the cultural adjustment.

 There are many frontiers in Israel-Palestine. On Wednesday of this week I was on my way home from a Bedouin encampment on the edge of the desert when I got a call to attend another house demolition in East Jerusalem. I had actually got a lift from an Israeli, who was mildly curious to know what I had been doing in a Bedouin camp. I told him that I and two colleagues had been called to witness the results of a visit from the police and the bulldozers – the usual team for Israeli demolitions – on the flimsy structures which constitute a Bedouin home.
