Briefings on sustainability and peace [PDF]
Building sustainability, building peace
What does it mean to have a commitment to peace in a world faced with climate change, environmental degradation, and resource depletion?
This briefing proposes that the current economic system is one of the greatest challenges to peace that we face today. It argues that when we live sustainably we work for peace and in witnessing to peace we must search for sustainable ways of living in the world.
The briefing includes suggested questions for reflection and a list of further resources and action.
Sustainable security: a briefing for Friends
What are the underlying drivers of insecurity?
This briefing suggests that the major trends likely to cause large-scale loss of life and security over the coming decades are: marginalisation of the majority world; climate change; competition over resources; and global militarisation. These are factors that can be mitigated successfully in ways that do not involve violent conflict. However, addressing them requires a fundamental shift in the way the world is organised, and in the way power is held.
This briefing explores this shift, with particular reflection points for Friends.
