Taking off our badges

5 August 2011

Yearly Meeting Gathering is coming to an end, and tomorrow we will all be taking off the badges we have been wearing all week and leaving Canterbury. Our badges have been our identity, allowing us to recognise and greet other YMGers. My badge has also reminded me where and when to go to my anchor group and has got me in to Rutherford for meals.

One of the things we have been challenged to do as we travel on from YMG is to proclaim our Quakerism. We have decided to witness to our testimony for the earth as a Low Carbon Community and we cannot keep that to ourselves. This is all part of our ongoing commitment to our testimonies of peace, truth, equality and simplicity and to be faithful we will need to be open about all of them and tell others where we are and where we are going.

This is a commitment for the whole of Britain Yearly Meeting but it is also about what each one of us is doing. We need to share our successes and our struggles with others, to say who we are as Quakers and what our faith means to us. Perhaps we should be prepared to wear our 'badges' both among Ffriends and in the world outside.
