So far so good

31 July 2011

On Friday night my partner informed me that my daughter's laptop that I had been busy un-virusing and fixing only had ten minutes of battery life when fully charged.  I quickly dusted off my old netbook and spent three hours de-virusing that and then inadvertantly breaking it at 3 in the morning. As I overslept we set off hours later than hoped and got stuck on the M25. So far, not ideal.

Arriving at the campsite, things seemed to turn around. We were immediately welcomed and as I pitched our tent the children ran around laughing and made friends, as did my partner (not the running around and laughing bit).

The first session last night was wonderful, a bit bitty with my youngest demanding to leave. Then demanding to come back. Then leave etc. I've never heard Quakers sing - I didn't think we did singing, that was unexpected and wonderful. Ivor the Engine was unexpected. The recording clerk playing the bassoon was very unexpected. Next time we advertise for a recording clerk we'll have to specify that they need to pull a part peice out of the bag for events

On the campus people have approached me after seeing my name badge because they've spoken to me over the 'phone or we have worked on things together over the years. They have been friendly and genorous.

On the campsite later we met lots of people and we have made friends from opposite end of the world, from 18 months to 80 years +. I now  know why we are called the Society of Friends.

So far so good.

Not read blogs before, apart from David Gee's, so commenting on one is a bit of a first for me. Just a quickie to say that I feel slightly let down by your confession, Nik, that you had to de-virus a family laptop and netbook. You, of all people, who I always think of as the Friends House IT guru par excellence. Whatever became of your anti-virus software, Friend? Or is this another case of the cobbler's daughter? Anyway, good to see the bikes on the back of your vehicle. My wife and I found ours invaluable when we gathered at Canterbury this time 12 years ago. Reading the Daily Bulletins (thank you for making this and the rest of the site so user-friendly) brings it all vividly to life, and recalls many memories of that never-to-be-forgotten week. Good idea to have a marquee with twin peaks; ours had a roof that was only slanted, and when the heavens opened on the last night it started sagging dangerously and threateningly. Eventually we found one of those huge wheeled bins that had been used to keep the drinks cool in a bath of ice and water, and carefully undid one corner of the roof. The resultant downpour was worthy of Niagara Falls. Oh, and our floor was treacherous too.
