Books, books, books

There are a lot of books about at YMG - new books being launched, old books being rehomed and unexpected books like these that I came across on my travels across campus, carved out of wood to make a seat in a campfire circle.

I will read the new books - I have bought Geoffrey Durham's book and I have just been enthused by hearing about Ann Hosking's extended essay on Truth. But I have given some of the old books a new home too. What they will give me is not dusty history but the living voices of their authors.

In the session on Economic Justice this morning we heard a timely reminder that if we are to renew our comittment to our testimonies and take this forward we need to return to the place from which testimony comes, to pray, to be open to the spirit, to wait humbly in the Light and to do that in community. Our friendly ancestors have been there before us. Women and men, not only in the 17th century but in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries too have tried to be faithful to what was asked of them. Although they often failed or came short, sometimes they did just what was required of them and from the old books come their authentic voices, helping us forward if we will listen to them.
