1652 Committee

Large rock on hillThe committee arranges pilgrimages for groups interested in seeing the area of north-west England known as the 1652 Country where George Fox gathered many of the first Quakers and where there are numerous places associated with 17th century Quakerism.

The committee had its origins in the events celebrating the 300th anniversary of Quakerism in 1952. Then Friends from around the world found their faith strengthened by visiting places of significance in Quaker history, and a small group was established to assist in the coordination of such visits. Those coming to the area are offered advice about their programmes and are given the opportunity to meet Friends who live and work there, while at the same time learning how Quaker origins impact upon Friends' outlook and work today.

Large country housePilgrimages include guided tours and talks as appropriate. A range of accommodation is available.

Groups come regularly from the USA and Japan, and often from Meetings, Quaker schools and other Quaker groups. Pilgrimages based at Swarthmoor Hall are arranged for individuals. Feedback from previous occasions has shown that people who arrange pilgimages through this committee have a very satisfying experience. This is much more than simply a trip to view our Quaker heritage, but a chance to participate in a spiritual journey.
